The UNIX Systems Administrator is responsible for the installation maintenance and tuning of HPUX, Solaris, AIX and Linux hardware and software systems and provides technical analysis and design support for applications running on the UNIX and Linux platforms. The individual manages project and task deliverable commitments, system changes and upgrades, as well as performs system debugging tasks in a financial environment.

The UNIX Systems Administrator job responsibilities:

1. Provides end users, developers and Operations with support including off shift and on call support.
2. Plans, prepares and applies maintenance fixes to system software and firmware as required.
3. Prepares, installs and implements operating software and associated components.
4. Debugs and solves problems associated with Unix and Linux Servers in production and test environments.
5. Maintains Unix disaster recovery plan and actively participates in technology and business recovery activities including travelling to recovery site for hardware maintenance.
6. Tests and implements hardware and software upgrades and if necessary works off shift to implement changes with minimal downtime.
7. Assists in evaluating and testing new hardware and software.
8. Develops and maintains scripts to automate tasks and deployment.
9. Develops test plans for implementing new software or new releases of software.
10. Tunes system software for peak performance and availability.
11. Works closely with architecture, engineering and security to implement new products and upgrade existing infrastructure.
12. Provides technical training for information technology personnel as needed.
13. Stays abreast with technical and operational tools and knowledge required to perform assigned duties
14. Perform system and application backup and restores based on documented procedures.

Experience/Knowledge Requirements -3 years+

1. Thorough knowledge and experience in all facets of Unix and Linux systems administration.
2. Advanced knowledge of networking concepts, TCP/IP, routing, Firewalls and network security.
3. Strong ability to document and create training material.
4. Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects.
5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to delegate and influence others.
6. Results oriented, exhibits excellent judgment, and has relentlessly high standards.
7. High degree of initiative and sense of urgency, flexibility, adaptability and comfort with ambiguity as needs change on a regular basis.

Required Skills/Abilities

1. Proficiency in HPUX and Solaris Systems Administration.
2. Solid understanding of HP Integrity and SUN SPARC hardware architecture.
3. Strong Shell Scripting and some experience with Perl Scripting.
4. Effective communication skills and ability to exercise proper judgement.
