Position Summary

Analysts collaborate with the deal team to conduct business due diligence, asset valuation, and financial modeling to evaluate new debt and equity investment opportunities. Analysts are also responsible for the portfolio management of active investments, and frequently interact with executive teams, equity investors, and key opinion leaders. This role focuses on life sciences and healthcare subsectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, healthcare technology, medical devices, and diagnostics/tools.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide analytical support of new investment opportunities through fundamental analysis, financial modeling, deal structuring and determining appropriate investment theses.
• Collaborate with deal team colleagues to create and present executive summaries and investment memorandums to senior management and investment committee.
• Act as a point of contact between Hercules Capital and its portfolio companies, manage active debt positions by reviewing financial statements and key performance indicators and provide regular updates regarding portfolio company progress to senior management and investment committee.
• Analyze industry-specific events such as private/public equity fundraising, M&A, clinical trial readouts, FDA regulatory decisions, and commercial launches.
• Perform ad hoc research and analysis of new markets, technologies, and business models to keep pace with ongoing and future trends in life science and healthcare.
• Develop an understanding of structured investments and credit actions.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Minimum of one to three years of related experience in an investment banking, structured lending, financial analysis, or healthcare consulting environment.
• Comprehensive understanding of financial statements and three-statement financial modeling.
• Must have effective verbal and written communications skills both internally and externally.
• Ability and willingness to meet established deadlines and handle multiple projects at any given time in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with credit underwriting and documentation is preferred, but not a requirement.
• Familiarity with drug development clinical trials and FDA regulation frameworks are a plus, but not a requirement.
• Experience in conducting financial analysis of private and/or public companies in the life sciences and healthcare industry is a plus, but not a requirement.
